M.S. Student, Graduate Research Assistant
Johan is a master’s student in Environmental Engineering Program in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of North Dakota (UND). He recently earned his bachelor’s degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where he majored in Applied Physics and minored in Environmental and Sustainability Studies. During his undergraduate studies, he participated in multiple research projects, including work with Dr. Darin Ulness on photothermal spectroscopy. In the summer of 2024, Johan joined UND’s International Research Experience for Undergraduates (IREU) program, collaborating with Dr. Johannes Van Der Watt on mineralizing industrial residues using carbon dioxide. Currently, he is conducting research on the detection of PFAS using nano-based sensors for an NIH Phase II project in the Ersan Research Lab.
He is passionate about Minnesota sports teams, including the Timberwolves, Vikings, and Minnesota United, and enjoys watching Liverpool play soccer. His interests extend to volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, supporting local communities, exercising and gardening.
